Prison for your loved ones—that’s what Southeast Louisiana Veterans Home feels like. Our 99-year-old father, who is in hospice care, is now subjected to harsh restrictions after we filed a complaint. We can no longer speak with him in private, and if he’s too unwell to be in the dining area, we’re completely barred from seeing him. This cruel policy isolates families and denies the dignity and compassion our veterans deserve, especially at the end of life.
Whoever gave this place more than a 1 star review, doesn’t go there everyday like I did. Most of the CNAs are abusive and careless. They put on a good act while the residents loved ones are there. They abused my dad. I have pictures. Took him out after 10 months. My family and I went every day twice a day for meals.
My father was there for only a few weeks before we had to remove him and take him to the hospital with dehydration and an infection that was overlooked. He died not long after. PLEASE DO NOT SEND A LOVED ONE HERE. We still wish we never did it. He might have not died so quickly and in so much pain. It hurts us deeply to think back to the things we saw there. Nurses yelling at the patients and threatening them, rough interactions, and, in the dementia ward where my father was, a complete lack of interaction with the patients. They just sat and watched the television, while the patients sat at the tables doing nothing at all, 16 hours a day. The fact that it was for veterans did not make it any better a place. This is not a humane facility. No one deserves to end their life in a place like this.
Both of my parents passed at this home. The medical attention was excellent. Extremely difficult working conditions but the staff never complains that I observed. My father was there for 2 1/2 years. I visited often. I organize a day each year to bring 30+ people to visit with the residents, as loneliness is their worst condition.
Went there to visit a friend and found a great place for any veteran who wants to make this his home. The staff was great and very helpful. All the residents have ample space for their indoor activities and there is always something going on to keep you busy and occupied throughout the day. God bless all of those fine men and women who staff this great veterans home and all the veterans who reside there.
