If I could give zero stars, I would. The Scripps Sleep Clinic is completely disorganized, impossible to reach, and shows zero regard for patient access. I tried calling multiple times and was left on hold for over 20 minutes each time with no answer. When I finally got through, I was met with rigid, illogical policies that made it extremely difficult to schedule the at-home sleep study I was referred for. I was told the only possible pickup time for the device was 11:00 AM, which would require me to take an entire day off work just to accommodate their inflexible system. I asked for a later pickup or to simply receive printed instructions (which they include in mailed kits), and was told no — without any logical reason. Then shortly after, I received a cancellation notification offering a 3:00 PM time slot. So clearly, other times exist — I was just being stonewalled for no reason. I also emailed their patient feedback address. No response. Like many other reviews here, I experienced a complete lack of communication, transparency, and basic patient respect. These kinds of barriers make it harder for people to get the care they need. Avoid this place if you can.
Had an appointment with a PA as a second opinion and that went well. Seemed to be competent and we had what I would have said was a good conversation. When I reached out to ask for a required referral for a dentist that could do Prosomnus, it was practically crickets. There was one response and then nothing again for over a month. I will choose not to use this team in the future and would not recommend anyone to them.
I was referred for a sleep study and I had a similar experience as described by Elesha. I cried putting on the unsanitary sleep monitor before bed & all I could think about was how many sweaty, obese men had worn the same device with the stretched out cloth strap that I had to wrap around my chest twice. Some of the employees conducted business while sitting on the beds in the overnight sleep clinic rooms including the sales rep for the CPAP machine. He put on gloves while showing me how to use the machine & then put his fingers inside his nostrils with the gloved hand. I stood while he sat on the bed touching my nose mask with his unhygienic fingers as he explained how to use the machine which was incredibly awkward & difficult to understand. I have zero confidence in the sleep study results due to the equipment used, the unprofessionalism of the staff & the only solution pushed was a CPAP machine causing me to think there was a commission or an incentive involved. I was told if the home study was inconclusive I would need to do an overnight study in their clinic. I would never stay overnight in any of the beds/rooms at this clinic which appear to be unsanitary and worn out. I'm considering asking for a referral to an outside, professional sleep clinic with higher standards. Overall my experience here was disturbing bordering on traumatic. I haven't experienced anything else like this at Scripps ever.
If you're a female patient with sleep problems look elsewhere -- this place is meant for men. Female patients are an afterthought -- if that. I did a home sleep test and it's clear the device was designed by men for men. Even the instructions they gave show a picture of a man. The device is a belt that attaches across your chest, above the nipple line, and only works if it is flat. They say women just adjust it up but that is not a solution. There was no consideration that women have breasts and that the device will not work on most female bodies. I called the Center both in the middle of the night and the morning to tell the sleep technicians the problems and seek assistance. Both times the male technicians were dismissive and told me how it has to lie flat to record, which I knew but was not a solution. They were missing the point that for many women a monitor that is wrapped around your chest cannot lie flat, but they clearly haven't considered that. I've been a patient at Scripps for several years and this is not the first time I've felt dismissed or spoken down to by male staff there. There seems to be a sexist culture that prioritizes the health needs of men and has less concern for women or think that our unique bodies and health needs.
I had a virtual consultation in February and the doctor told me it would take a few weeks to get my home monitor. In March, I called the sleep center and asked about the progress- they said they had inquired with my insurance and were awaiting approval. I called my insurance, and they told me they had never received a request/claim. I then called the Scripps Sleep Center and let the receptionist know there was no request received and she said she would talk to the Insurance department. I haven't heard anything in 2 weeks, so I call back today. The receptionist then tells me they need to schedule an appointment for me before they can send the insurance request. WHY did nobody call me to schedule an appointment or try to schedule the last two times I called to inquire about when I can complete my sleep study. The next available appointment is over a month away. Unknowledgeable staff when it comes to processing patients.
