I wish I can give a zero to this medical center. I arrived 15 minutes before the appointment while the doctor is ready 40 minutes after the initial appointment time, which means that I wait there for almost 1 hour for no reason. All I need is to take the last vaccine, while the doctor's assistant said they have no vaccine ready and I have to schedule another nurse visit, which I tried before, while can not find a way to schedule it on the website. I am not sure whether those hospitals that make billions a year could not afford to build a schedule system that enable visitors to schedule a nurse visit online or it is completely lack of respect for the patients time. Maybe also, they even do not care about the life of its patients. I am would definitely not recommend this place to anyone. Instead, I will tell everyone how bad this experience was. No wonder this place have only 3.0 score. It deserves it, if not lower score.
Avoid This Office – Misleading and Overpriced I called this office looking to schedule a primary care appointment because I wasn’t feeling well. After explaining my symptoms, the front desk staff redirected me to their urgent care, claiming it was more appropriate for my situation. I followed their advice and went in, expecting a standard urgent care visit. I was seen for less than 10 minutes, only received a COVID and strep test, and was told I’d get a call later with the results. No treatment was provided, and both tests came back negative. I was then shocked to receive a bill for over $800. When I followed up, I was told that even though I saw urgent care providers and the signage says “urgent care,” they don’t actually bill as urgent care due to being located in a commercial building. Their explanation was that they need to cover costs for their 10,000+ employees. Frankly, this felt like false advertising. To make matters worse, I could have gone to a nearby urgent care or used my primary care annual wellness visit both of which would have cost significantly less or nothing at all. The lack of transparency, misleading guidance, and excessive charges are exactly why people are frustrated with the healthcare system. I would strongly recommend others look elsewhere for care that is fair, honest, and upfront about costs.
I honestly cannot more strongly recommend against going to UChicago Medicine for annual care or blood work. I was charged close to $1000 for routine bloodwork that was ordered in connection with my annual physical exam after insurance even though I had the same tests done the year prior without paying a cent out of pocket. I had expressed to my primary care provider that I only wanted routine tests done and so was extremely surprised by the bill I was given a month later. In fact, they have continued to send me additional bills even a year later for the bloodwork that was done even though I paid my balance in full last year. They also initially tried to balance bill me and gave me a bill for closer to $1,500, which is actually illegal, and they only reduced it after I went through the bill line-by-line and identified the practice myself. The billing department refused to work with me or my insurance on the charge codes which are the reason why I was charged such different rates for the same tests over two years. I was also advised by my provider to have additional tests done that ended up being completely unnecessary. Extremely disappointing experience, so I recommend that if you do seek care at UChicago, that you make sure not to get any tests done there and to go elsewhere. I have since sought care at another clinic and had significantly lower costs and a better experience with significantly shorter waits for an appointment.
Their endocrinology department is a god damn nightmare. Sent countless referrals from multiple physicians trying to get me seen. They keep claiming they never get them despite sending us confirmations. Finally they say they referrals are inadequate, not good enough diagnoses. They need the tests that only they can order as endocrinologists to get an appointment. Nightmarish, disrespectful behavior. How anyone is supposed to navigate this mess while dealing with an illness is beyond all comprehension. They seem more focused on adding to suffering than help healing.
I’ve experienced great customer service with the front desk staff and excellent care from the physicians and urgent care services. The facility is new and clean. Scheduling is easy. Parking is available. Rogelio was the best phlebotomist. I’m very grateful for his professional skill and manners. Thank you, U Chicago Medicine River East!
