I was at this ER yesterday and I had a nurse named Nick. He was, by far, the BEST nurse I’ve ever had! He truly cared for me as his patient. Not only did he do his job duties, he conversed with my grandma and I. He made us feel comfortable and at ease. Nick was very professional and had the greatest bedside manner. Also, he checked on me often, explained what was happening and what was going to happen and made sure I understood. EXCELLENT at putting in my IV and taking it out, leaving no bruising or lumps! He should be employee of the month or given a raise or something special! KUDOS TO NICK! Thank you! As well, Dr. Barnard was excellent! He listened to me, truly listened! He was able to figure out what was wrong with me and didn’t brush me off. He checked on me numerous times and explained everything in detail so I could understand! I’m grateful for him! Thank you, Dr. Barnard! Now, I would like to talk about the day before which was my first day at the ER. My nurse, Autum, was awful to me! She barely spoke to me. She didn’t offer a blanket, even though I said I was feverish with cold chills. She didn’t put the bed railing up so I could maneuver my bed. I had to lay the whole five hours I was there. That’s very uncomfortable for anyone! She didn’t give me the nurse call button which also had the TV remote on it so I had no entertainment and no way to call a nurse. I was there for a UTI so of course I needed to use the bathroom and the 5.5 hours I was there she never offered once! She never came in during those 5.5 hours until my grandma left my room and went to find her. Also, they knew they needed a urine sample from me because I thought it was a UTI and they waited four hours before they took that urine sample! Why did they not give me the urine test as soon as I got there? And why was I not offered to use the bathroom during those 5.5 hours? And my IV was hooked up to my bed so I couldn’t even get up and go ask to use the bathroom! When we asked her why she didn’t take the urine sample when I got there she just nodded at us! She didn’t say anything she literally just nodded her head at us. And lastly, the spot she put the IV now has a hard lump! WHY? And then we have the doctor, Dr. Yuri. He was barely in my room. He literally did not listen to what I had to say! He said what he needed to and as he was finishing his sentence, he was already walking out of the room! I only seen him two times during the whole 5 1/2 hour visit and both times that’s how he was! And because they couldn’t find anything wrong, he told me I have some virus. He had no answer or explanation for why I was feeling the way I was feeling. Mind you, I told them I was so sick that my lips, nose and cheeks went numb on me! He never brought that up. He never asked questions about it and he never tested me for anything for it! And he just brushed me off, saying I had some virus, whatever was out there! So I got sent home after 5 1/2 hours thinking I just had a virus of some sort. And the next morning I woke up I was literally peeing blood! Straight blood! That’s why I had to go back to the ER where, thank God, Dr. Barnard and Nick took care of me! If it wasn’t for Doctor Barnard and Nic I would have zero faith in the hospital! And it was absolutely, by far, the worst experience in an emergency room I’ve ever had that day! Once again, thank you, Doctor, Barnard and Nic for restoring my faith in this ER and being the great people you are!

Do not go here for any reason unless you are selling girl scout cookies. Our daughter was sick for over a week with headaches, passing out, weakness, etc. Not a single sympton for uti, but that is what they diagnosed. 2 days later, she is in the ICU in Lehigh Valley with a serious diagnosis. Dr. Sheen and ER nurse Ann should be ashamed of themselves for a serious lack of professionalism and knowledge. I had to care for her when she passed out and threw up. The nurse told her it wasn't serious! I'm serious when I say never again will any of us ever go there again. We will drive hours away to get proper care.

As a plea to any parent reading this PLEASE do not choose to have your child here. Especially as a first time parent. From the start of our stay the nurse on duty was dismissive and very pushy. Neither me or my wife wanted to use an epidural during birth and the nurse Cindie was very pushy and disrespectful. Basically saying she has to get one and saying we were stupid for not wanting it. After birth (ended up a C section) my wife and I had to beg to get her incision looked at and dressing changed. When they finally did they were very rough and rushed. When we were concerned about the amount of blood my wife had we got a quick glance and “it’s fine” there was literally a huge puddle between her legs! I had to demand they helped her clean up and got met with an again disrespectful and dismissive attitude. We were left hours without a nurse checking in at all during the day. We had several concerns with our son and were either dismissed completely or were given short, rude opinionated answers. Our last day there they did not check on us once even though our son had a mild case of jaundice and some heart issues. We were kept waiting over 8 hours on test results for his heart and when they let us know the results it was made clear they had known for quite awhile but didn’t bother to tell us. When both my wife’s OB and the pediatrician cleared us for discharge we were kept waiting almost 5 hours on “paperwork”. The pediatrician, Dr burns was also very rude and when I was asking questions about my sons heart (I also have a heart condition) I was told “ your not a doctor, so you wouldn’t know” she also made my wife feel horrible for not being able to breastfeed and when she started crying simply said “you should try harder”. Overall an awful experience. However I will note that our Night Nurse Bonnie was great, very compassionate and understanding. Took time to answer questions and checked in often, also my wife’s OB Dr smith was very good, helpful and understanding. Those two were redeeming qualities. The rest of the staff made a joyful time in our families life a stressful, awful experience.

As a cardiac patient, a serious heart episode is scary. My nurses and doctor were just amazing and saw to my every need. My room put hotels to shame and the meals were great. Thank you to all the staff at UPMC
