Do not waste your time dealing with this place. It's the biggest joke imaginable! My cardiac provider sent a referral to them to schedule a sleep study on November 3. After more than a week, I called to see why I had not been contacted about the referral. Spoke with a young man who stated that they had not received any referral. I questioned the young man about where the study would be performed and he said Chapel Hill. I told him that was not correct, the study was supposed to be in Rocky Mount at Nash General Hospital which is a part of the UNC health care system. I then contacted my cardiac providers office which verified the referral had been sent and a confirmation received. My provider then stepped up to the plate and contacted this place again on my behalf. Finally, on November 24, 2025 I received a call from someone from this place. Then this person starting asking me for my name, date of birth, address, phone number etc. When I complained about the need for this info, I was told it was for privacy reasons. I then pointed out to the person that they obviously already had this information in order to contact me, she wanted to get loud and try to interrupt me and attempted to talk over me. I requested her supervisor's telephone in order to speak with her supervisor. I was told the supervisor did not have a direct number (obviously a lie) and they would call me back. The supervisor called me on November 25, 2025 and started asking the same questions as before even after I identified myself as the person she called to speak to again claiming it was part of their privacy policy. This is insane! When an individual has identified themselves as the party who you are calling, just deliver the damn message and be done with it. If that person has lied, you are in the clear because you have a recording of the conversation. I will NEVER have any sleep study done by this place which employs such ignorant people and I encourage everyone else to use other facilities as well .
Had a sleep study done at the UNC Hospital Sleep Clinic in mid-December of 2024. I did not receive any information prior to the study - only a street address. This different from other procedures I’ve had in the past where they send an info packet ahead of time. I had several questions about this: Where should I park? Should I eat before I arrive? What should I bring? How much does this cost? None of this was conveyed prior to the visit. I researched some on my own, left plenty of time to locate the office, and parked in a garage/deck nearby for patients (they don’t validate, so will get you for another $10 on the way out). After having trouble finding the check-in, I asked the only person at the information desk about it. A rather rude woman showed me to a chair where I should wait to be called. That did not take long and the check-in clerk was very nice, but I was shocked to learn that my sleep study would be FOUR THOUSAND DOLLARS and that insurance would only cover about half of that because I hadn't yet met my deductible for the year. Wow. I decided to go ahead with the study since it had taken me months to get in. After checking in, I made my way to the elevators and up to the lab, where you must call to be let in (good for security reasons). My sleep technician, DeCourt (sp?) was very nice and knowledgeable. He adjusted the temperature in the room and I thought the mattress was decent enough. I let DeCourt know that I had not received any information about how to arrive prepared. He apologized and said he'd pass the word to doctors and office staff. After eating dinner (which I brought), I settled in, whittled through some email, and watched a football game on the TV in the room. The room itself was small and dated, but it's in the older part of the hospital. Everything was clean and neat, so it wasn't a problem for one night. DeCourt then set up the contacts on my head, chest, and legs. The ones on my head required glue that was rather unpleasant both in odor and feel. It was somewhat difficult to get off the next day, but DeCourt said olive oil would break it up and get it out - that definitely helped. The study was apparently successful and they learned that I need a CPAP, which was my GP's suspicion. Unfortunately, I was not fitted for it (CPAP titration was not done) during the study. A titration is required to get a prescription and a script is required to get a CPAP (I tried buying one on my own, but dealers won’t sell them without a prescription and titration). So now I’m required to return to have that done, which means another overnight study that will cost an additional TWO THOUSAND DOLLARS out of pocket! An slot was not available until June (I called in January). Additionally, when I called to schedule the CPAP titration, I let them know that I did not receive any cost or prep packet before the first study. The woman on the phone sounded half asleep and did not apologize – she just recited a line that sounded like something she says often. An apology is fine, but it would be good to know that the office is making corrections so this doesn’t happen to others. Ultimately, this is up to the doctors. Wow again. I canceled the titration visit and I’m not really sure what to do next. It will be over four thousand dollars total to just get a prescription. Then I have to actually buy the machine! If I can come up with the money, there are lots of other needs in my family that come first. This is ridiculous. If you need a sleep study done, my advice would be to do your homework and go somewhere that gets good ratings.
Too hot to sleep comfortably. They have to use this heavy duty glue to account for this (because when you sweat, the sensors can fall off). Where a bed should be, it seems to be a sheet of plywood with a sheet on top of it. Incredibly uncomfortable. I'm going to continue, but I want to make it clear: DO NOT HAVE YOUR SLEEP STUDY HERE!! Don't do it inside a hospital with comes with all the NOISES of a hospital. Doors opening and closing, talking, overhead pages of ER codes. It's nearly impossible to fall asleep, and you'll constantly get woken up. If, for some reason, you can't have your sleep study elsewhere, at least bring your own pillow. Anytime is better than the textbook size lumps they give you. I've had more comfortable sleeping experiences on an airplane!! (None of this has to do with the discomfort of sleeping hooked up with all the cords. That's a necessary evil. They do NOTHING to mitigate this).
Run far away from this place. I did a home sleep study. Steve hooked up all my wires. When I came back the next day to get unhooked, the girl said she had never seen that much glue on someone’s head. She apologized and said she would talk to him. But I had no idea how bad it was until I got home. I basically had to soak every inch of my hair in acetone just so I could try to comb some of the glue out it took over two hours, and I lost a ton of hair, which at my age I cannot afford to lose. Horrible experience!
Don't do a sleep study at UNC Sleep Disorders Center!!! Please look at all of the one star reviews on Yelp and other sites and be thankful that other people have warned you to stay away from this place. This clinic will bill you over $5,000 to lie on an uncomfortable hospital bed in a noisy, light-filled room with screaming toddlers in the room next to you. Even if you don't sleep for one single minute, the charge for the sleep study here will be over $5,000. As soon as you are hooked to the machines, you owe 5K+ . If you need a sleep study, I recommend that you go to a facility that at least tries to make their rooms more hotel or bedroom-like (these look and smell 100% like a hospital room) and is also more transparent about their charges. When I made my appointment here, the clinic staff member told me that the study would be completely covered by my insurance, so no cost to me. Not true!!! My family is not going to be able to have Christmas presents for the next few years because of this sleep study. Even the techs who work at this clinic were telling me that patients constantly are freaking out when they receive bills for many thousands of dollars, even after insurance. Kyle, the manager of this clinic, refused to even talk to me about billing issues, even though I called on three separate occasions. When I reported this incident to UNC Patient Relations, the rep told me that she has gotten many similar complaints and that the best advice she could give was not to trust anyone at the clinics about what the billing cost to you will be. Instead get the billing code from the clinic and give it to your health insurance company.
