So I should have written this review back when it happened (about 2 years ago). I went in for years of sleep issues. Unable to fall asleep, stay asleep at night, but feeling an overwhelming crush of fatigue randomly during the day. When I saw the doctor, he explained to me that all of my sleep problems were because I was a woman! I (a happily child-free woman in her 30s) was waking up during the night because I was listening for a baby crying! And my husband, and all men, fall asleep immediately because they have a clear conscience! Which clearly means me, as a woman, have too many things to feel guilty for to sleep restfully. I, also, possibly had restless legs due to anemia, though I have exactly ZERO issues with my blood and iron counts! He said he wouldn't put me through any tests for narcolepsy because that was "an expensive diagnosis." So, I didn't go back and have yet to have my issues resolved, since I continue to be female. I would advise to go to the other sleep clinic in BG, since this doctor is so out of touch and blatantly sexist that he likely hurts more than he helps.
Our first visit with Zachek, he had his intern do a full "complete exam" which took over an hour of just the intern interviewing us and then after he had his turn, then Zachek finally decided to step in and do the whole thing all over again, asking the same exact questions as if he wasn't sitting right there. Constantly brought up weight, even though my spouse is physically disabled and cannot do a fraction of what able bodied, normal people can and suffers a myriad of other chronic conditions and does the best they can just surviving. Seems to just be a con for selling cpap equipment. During the exam as far as treatment, he wanted us to download an app, right then and there to our phone and I guess using whoever's app he is plugging is sufficient medical treatment according to a doctor like him. If an app is all he was going to recommend, why even waste time going to the appointment. Did not seem to care at all and would hear what you were saying but not actually listen to it. One of the worst doctors visits we've ever had and I'm not even sure how he's made it this far as a physician. If you are seeking assistance for sleep related issues, just go to the app store and save yourself a copay and degradation.
Dr. Zachek is a no nonsense doctor who really knows his stuff. His office staff are also very nice. When I met him in person, it was obvious that he knows about everything there is about sleep disorders. He comes across as very humble and caring and I'm glad I chose his clinic to visit. I think he has a deeper understanding of patients as well by his many years experience in Emergency Medicine and Critical Care.
*Read for pros and cons* Pros: The office and administrative staff here are very friendly and helpful. The office is clean and there is never a long wait to be seen. Nurse Goodman is a great provider! I appreciate her thoroughness and Bedside manner. Con: Dr. Zalchek may be a good doctor, but he is awful with his bedside manner, in my experience. I get anxious every time I go to my appointment that I will have to see him. My first visit with him he remarks how perfectly I am using and responding to the CPAP, then suddenly he brings up my weight and begins giving me elementary advice for weight loss, even recommended WLS, without any consultation or information from me about my current diet, exercise, or weight loss attempts. He knew nothing about me but a number on a scale. I politely told him I was not comfortable discussing weight loss at this time and wanted to focus on using my CPAP correctly and effectively. He ignored this and continued to offer unsolicited advice. I stood my ground after some back and forth and finally he stops. I was completely bombarded with talk of weight loss and left feeling incredibly awful from this interaction. I hope to not have anymore interactions with him and can continue to just see Goodman.
After reading some reviews, I was somewhat reluctant to visit this Dr.,since I’m obese. As a new patient for Dr. Zachek, I am so happy to have him as my new Dr. Very thorough, and helpful with my c-pap supplies. Can’t be more thankful for him and his efficient staff. Never mentioned my weight problem, just assured me that he was there to help me, I drive a truck with cdl license.
