God forbid you are a parent AND have a job. They also don't understand the malfunctions in their own automated prompt systems, nor do they work to improve said systems. I'm not sure what type of career is required to make all follow up in person appointments, all EEGs, all 48 hr EEGs and all zoom appointments where your child must be present in home with you, (so out of school for appointment). Whatever career allows that much time off without reprimand and with understanding, PLEASE SIGN ME UP! What I do get is the privilege of passive aggressive little notes on my childrens anti-seizure medicine bottles. Such as : "Please keep up with appointments to continue getting refills." How sweet. As if I want to or enjoy missing or having to cancel or reschedule meetings for 2 children. How absolutely uncouth of me to want to keep my epileptic children seizure free. Weird that I also need a job to pay for things. And just circumstantial poor luck on my part that I don't have much support or coverage when it comes to family or friends sharing in the load of all these appointments. That one is on me. It would be great if Boston Children's Hospital could educate themselves regarding how families come in all different shapes and sizes these days. We are not all dual income households. Pointing fingers at the single, working parent is getting old. Do better.
I left the Pulmonology office extremely disappointed and upset with how my daughter and I were treated. From the moment we checked in, the experience was uncomfortable. The man at the front desk was unfriendly and made me feel unwelcome. The nurse who took my daughter back for vitals was kind and compassionate — she was the only positive part of the visit. Unfortunately, once we were placed in the room, things quickly went downhill again. I understand my daughter’s behavior can be challenging — she’s three years old, has an IEP, and struggles in unfamiliar situations — but Dr. Lystra Hayden’s reaction made everything harder. She mispronounced my daughter’s name twice, and when I politely corrected her, she simply said “oh” in a dismissive way, which completely took me by surprise. I was alone and trying to manage my daughter’s behavior while answering the doctor’s questions about her asthma. My child was running around the room and even out the door, yet the doctor didn’t pause or attempt to help redirect her. While I was chasing my daughter down the hallway, the nurses at the nurses’ station watched while scrolling on their phones. When I returned to the room, Dr. Hayden continued asking questions as if nothing had happened. When I asked if she could review my daughter’s recent bloodwork that had already been done, instead of trying to locate it, she said she didn’t know where it was and could “just order more.” Why would you want to do that to a toddler? After all of this, her attitude and lack of professionalism made me feel judged and extremely uncomfortable. After driving an hour and a half to this appointment, I ended up walking out before it was even completed. In the end, the one who suffered from all of this was my daughter — not the doctor or the office. This entire experience was unacceptable. I left feeling unheard, unsupported, and deeply disappointed. I truly hope this office learns to approach families — especially those with young children and special needs — with more compassion, patience, and understanding.
Check in at lobby computers. but you also need to register when you enter any office!! Even though security would say" your all set!" .
The nurses/doctors are all very nice and capable. Although, in my opinion, they've been swift to dismiss my questions/opinions which, can be a bit of a red flag in this climate. The rest of the staff is a lacking to be honest. It seems as if there is a giant lack of effort to communicate amongst the departments and to their guests. You have to fight to get their attention and when you do it's lackluster at best. I do hope to be pleasantly surprised at our next visit.
Great Hospital. Staff - Doctors, Nurses, front desk workers, etc., very compassionate, listen to what you have to say and advise the best they can. They are patient and show empathy. The place is clean and parking in the main garage is free. I highly recommend this hospital.
