Not impressed with the reception. I called for an initial appointment, and right away they told me they didn't take my insurance, I have Medicare & United Healthcare Supplement. I told them I had new insurance at the first of the year in three weeks, then they said they couldn't treat my condition and should call the Rochester NY facility, but I live in Arizona. I asked to make an appointment after January 1st And With overly sweet and sugary tone she says why don't you try us back in a few weeks Sir. Basically dismissed me. Wow! I expected Better service from Mayo Clinic....

Dr. Peter Johnston performed a robotic assisted ventral (abdominal) hernia repair on me in October 2025. He and his surgical team at the Mayo Hospital Phoenix performed extremely well. Surgical mesh was used along with dissolvable sutures and medical adhesive. Dr. Johnston is a very knowledgeable and skilled surgeon with excellent listening and explanation skills. I was impressed by his deep knowledge of human anatomy, and the technology used in leading edge surgery. He was very patient with my many questions, and quelled my fears of undergoing my first ever internal surgery. His pain management approach got me regular within 48 hours and feeling quite normal after 2 weeks. Every step of the process from initial consultation, to pre-op interview and tests, to the actual surgery ran right on time with excellent communication and care. Thank you!

My mom has been in and out of the hospital for the past six weeks. We can not explain the level of care at this hospital, it is the best. The staff and Drs are so professional and knowledgeable. My only negative was I wish they had released my mom to a rehab clinic instead of allowing her to go home. The care here is seriously top notch.

I had hernia surgery on October 17th 2025 with an arrival time of 1:36pm at the Phoenix Mayo Clinic Hospital. It was an excellent experience until I got toI recovery. I had been told that this was an outpatient procedure so I was expecting to go home after the surgery. I had a driver lined up to take me back to my house. In recovery I was told by the recovery nurse named Cheryl that I needed a person to stay with me for 24 hours after surgery. I told Cheryl that the Mayo Clinic message portal had a message for me saying that this is recommended and it did not say required. I had taken a screen shot of the portal message stating this and offered to show her but she did not have any interest in seeing it. Because it is recommended and not required I did not have a person setup to stay with me. She said that I can’t go home and would need to stay in the hospital overnight. I told her that I do not have a driver for the next day and I clearly stated to her that I did not want to stay overnight but she continued to ignore my wishes. She then said that I needed the pain medication and my pharmacy is closed. Of course it was closed by this hour and you would have thought that given the late start for the surgery that a prescription would have been made available to me a day or two before so I would have it when I was released but no one at the Mayo Clinic thinks that far ahead. She then told me that if I leave the hospital now that my insurance would not cover me. I discovered later that this was a blatant lie. As a result of all of these claims I acquiesced and stayed the night in the Mayo Clinic Hospital. I spent the next 11 hours staring at the ceiling in my hospital room. My last meal was 38 hours earlier so I asked about using the cafeteria but was told that it was closed. I was so angry because of all the lies that I was told in recovery not to mention that I was extremely hungry and that I was not able to sleep. I never once took any of the pain medication while I was waiting the 38 hours because my pain level was at a 3 and I did not see the need to take an opioid. Also, I have not even picked up the prescription medication from CVS that nurse Cheryl said was so important for me to have. She painted this doom and gloom scenario of not having the pain medication. She also equated me leaving to a cop letting a drunk driver continue driving home. This made absolutely no sense to me because I had a driver waiting for me outside to take me home. My desire was to go home from this outpatient procedure but my wishes were continually ignored. I consider what was done to me by the Mayo Clinic as false imprisonment. Don't waste your time complaining to the Mayo Clinic Office of Patient Experiences because they will just sweep your complaint under the rug and tell you their actions were out of an abundance of caution. That is what I was told by a person named Jacinda in that office. She totally ignored the reasons for my complaint. I requested to go home and the doctor said that we can't hold you. The nurse named Cheryl in recovery told 3 different lies to keep me there and Jacinda from the Office of Patient Experience totally ignored that part of my complaint. The Mayo Clinic will never admit that their staff did anything contrary to the patiences wishes. There needs to be accountability but it will never come from the Mayo Clinic investigating their own actions.

Been a Mayo patient for over two decades now and I am seeing just how the process of providing care has deteriorated over the recent past! They flat out tell you to go to urgent care because the primary care providers have no time. The specialists stop providing care saying ‘we don’t treat this condition anymore’ or ‘you don’t meet the criteria for treatment’ it’s all so ridiculous, how do I get a diagnosis if I can’t see the doctor who can order some tests that can provide some insights? Mayo only seems to want to take on exotic or difficult cases that they can use to further their reputation online and stay relevant in the news! Patient focused care and preventative care is not prioritized at all. The doctors seem to be in a hurry and are more focused on entering data into computers. I was billed for a one hour consultation when the doctor spent twenty minutes talking to me before I was ushered out the door! I’ve started seeing specialists outside of Mayo now where at least I’m assured of time and attention. Overall extremely disappointing and frustrating experiences lately. They are remodeling and renovating extensively, of only they would perhaps hire more physicians that would be helpful. I’m not paying as much money as they charge to see a PA most times!
