Verified patient experiences
I was never sent ANYTHING in advance to tell me about this sleep study nor was something in mychart. Fortunately I had had two there before and what went on. This experience was just as bad as my other two here (I have also had one out of state that conditions and what went on was much better). The sleep study rooms have too much light, are noisy (staff conversations are easily heard and street noise is incredibly loud as well). All of that makes it hard to sleep. Too many patients are scheduled for one night - or they need more staff. By the time they got around to me to put the on the equipment it was late and I was struggling to stay awake (this is the second time this happened). Telling them that makes no difference in their behavior (nor did it last time). Falling asleep only to have them have to wake you up to put all the monitors on you makes no sense. Especially since they wake you to leave at 5am. And once you fall asleep waking you makes it even harder to have a decent sleep study. Fortunately I managed (both times) to stay awake while waiting but this is unacceptable. Then they put some monitor on wrong and woke me 45 minutes later to replace a cable to a lead. And they didn't notice this earlier when they did their check? Also they don't agree how to attach the snoring mic. The lady put it on my adams apple which was incredibly uncomfortable once I was lying down. The man there came in to move it when I complained and said it was put in the wrong place. It was far more comfortable after he moved it to where he said you are supposed to put it. Then when taking off all the stuff the lady sat in the chair and had me sitting on the bed bent over with my head on my knees so she could see what she was doing. She only pulled off some of the goop and I kept having to ask her to get out more of it. I finally told her it would be easier to get it all out and find it if I was sitting in the chair and she was standing so she could look down on my head; it was uncomfortable to sit there so bent over for her to do this. So complaining that it hurt her back to stand more than a few minutes she did stand up and allow me to sit in the chair. She got far more out when she could actually see what she was doing (if she can't stand to do her job and yet you need to stand to do it, maybe this is not the job for her), including big globs behind my ears she had missed the first time. The other three times I was the one sitting in the chair and people were gentle taking things off and the goop out of my hair. Once she was standing she chose to yank really hard (which she wasn't doing before) pulling out a bunch of my hair (which hurt) and a lot more came out in the shower. I'd give this sleep lab a negative 100 given a choice. I had a sleep study done in another state and it had NONE of these issues. Not one. The only pluses I can say about here is that they no longer limit you to two sheet like thin blankets (I had to put my jacket on to stay warm and sleep in that at the first study as they flatly refused to give me any more blanket and said they couldn't turn the heat up in the room because the thermostat was locked - how does that make any sense?) and they replaced the worn out thin mattress where the springs dug into you with better ones. They are too firm but at least they are otherwise decent mattresses. Bring your own pillow as theirs are really flat and encased in noisy plastic. Go somewhere else unless they are just as bad as this sleep study lab or if it really matters that all your records are in mychart so different providers can see them. I understand that none of the other sleep centers use EPIC/mychart, just the one at UMMC.
The facility looks old, crowded and needs updating. The study room was not sound or light proof, which impacted the sleep when staff members talked to each other in their work area at night. Some information given to us was not consistent and caused some trouble. Most of the staff were friendly though.
